Stream New Single “Bad for Loving You”
Bonnie Tyler’s surprise new single ‘Bad for Loving You’ is out now. It’s lifted from her recent live album, In Berlin, which she recorded on tour.
In April, In Berlin received a 4.5 star review in Spill magazine. The review praises the album, stating that it is “further proof of her incredible ability to touch souls with her songs and voice”.
Bonnie’s original studio version of “Bad for Loving You” is featured on her 2019 album Between the Earth and the Stars. We had the chance to speak with some of the contributors to learn more about the magic behind the recording session.
Producer David Mackay shared his experience: “I received the demo from Amy and started working on the arrangement. Her backing vocals kept haunting me, so I asked her if she would be happy for me to keep them off her demo and add them behind Bonnie. Thankfully, she agreed, so I stuck with the tempo of the original and built the track around Amy.”
‘Bad for Loving You’ boasts an impressive lineup of musicians, including guitarist Geoff Whitehorn, known for his work with 70s rock bands If, Crawler, and Procol Harum. After laying down the guitar, David Mackay headed to Richard Cottle’s studio to record the synths, with Laurence Cottle on bass. Additional percussion was provided by Daz Shields, who played on three songs in the album.
“It started with ‘Slow Walk’ and I just loved the feel of that track,” Daz Shields explained. “David sent me the track and I recorded the drums in my studio and sent them back over to him, not thinking they’d ever make the album. When I heard the final track, I was blown away. And David used my backing vocals too! And then came ‘Bad for Loving You’ and ‘Move.’ Just so honored to be involved.”
David fondly recalls the final stages of production: “I sent Bonnie the track in advance, and she loved it. When she came to my place, we recorded the vocal in no time at all.”
This live version features Bonnie’s touring band: Matt Prior on guitar, John Young on keys, Ed Poole on bass, and Alex Toff on drums.
